ON THE POINT OF "WORD AND ITS MEANING" (BY THE MATERIAL OF GERMAN)

Abstract. The article examines the main characteristics of the "word" and associated with it notions "sign theory", "alive" and "dead" inner form of the word and the causes of its loss, the semantic structure of the word, the types of lexical meanings: direct and indirect, free and phraseologically related. The author relies on the existing in modern linguistics distinction of the subject as an existing element of the surrounding reality and the notion of it. All the positions are illustrated in the article by the examples from W. Borchert’s, J. W. Goethe’s works that generally allowed confirming the conclusion about the "word" as a major and very complex operating unit of lexicology.
