FOLKLORIC AND ETHNOGRAPHIC SOURCES TO DESCRIBE THE FOLK RITUAL "KAPUSTKI" IN THE NOVEL BY P. I. MELNIKOV- PECHERSKY "ON THE HILLS"

Abstract. The article describes the results of studying folkloric and ethnographic sources to describe the folk ritual "kapustki" in the novel by P. I. Melnikov-Pechersky "On the Hills". The author analyzes how the mentioned ritual’s image formed and developed in the popular ethnographic literature of the XIX century. The paper argues that rite’s description in the novel is ethnographically unreliable and lacks regional colouring. The researcher shows how the choice and interpretation of ethnographic realia were determined by A. Pechersky’s artistic and compositional purposes.
