Abstract. "Mother" is one of the fundamental archetypical images of world culture which have many artistic and esthetic interpretations conditioned by the demands of a certain historical period, national traditions, writer’s individual worldview. The author examines the basic typological modifications of "mother" archetypical image by the material of the works of "Russian Caucasians" - M. Yu. Lermontov, A. A. Bestuzhev-Marlinsky, A. V. Druzhinin and L. N. Tolstoy. The images of "heroic", "cross-cultural" and "pacifist" mother are identified as the key ones. Regardless of their multi-aspect nature, all "maternal images" have a common element - peacemaking efforts and will to terminate military conflict.
