Abstract. The article deals with the peculiarities of existential constructions with modal verbs must and have to in the American English. The author describes the frequency of these structures in various speech registers, the main lexical units and their variability in synchronic and diachronic aspects. Particular attention is paid to the consideration of the semantics of existential constructions.
