HISTORY OF THE STUDY OF EUPHEMISMS IN DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN LINGUISTICS

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the history of studying and comprehending euphemisms from the time of Antiquity to the present day. It is with this examination that a change of approaches is observable: from the purely extralinguistic (Antiquity, Middle Ages) to the linguistic one (the XX century), and now the contamination of linguistic and extra-linguistic approaches occurs. In addition, the author outlines the areas of study of euphemisms in Russian and foreign linguistics, identifies the key theoretical problems and main trends, and it helps to outline some prospects for studying euphemisms.
