THE ORIGIN OF SINFUL PRIEST’S IMAGE IN AMERICAN COLONIAL LITERATURE

Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the reasons for the emergence of sinful priest’s image in the colonial literature of the USA, which evolves and goes later into the works of the English-speaking writers of other countries. The study analyzes how it is shown in the work of W. Bradford "Of Plymouth Plantation". The authors focus on a critical analysis of clergyman’s status in the settlements of New England and Europe, paying attention to the formation of an emerging nation.
