Abstract. The authors of the article consider some features of the embodiment of ideas about Orenburg in the works by V. I. Dal, who lived and served for almost a decade under Governor-General V. А. Perovskii in the first half of the XIX century. On the basis of Yu. M. Lotman’s methodology Dal’s "Orenburg" tales are analyzed, which enables to reveal the coefficients of organization, closedness-openness, discontinuity-continuity of the artistic space of the town. The space in the stories is characterized by the centrality (with the Russian centre and the Asian periphery), the closedness of the town centre and the openness of the steppe periphery, etc. This study will help in the analysis of the features of urban space representation in the works of other authors.
