Abstract. The article raises the relevant problems of attitude to the people with restricted abilities. The researchers refer to the novel "Out of My Mind" by Sharon Draper, since the authoress, the mother of a disabled child, as nobody else understands what difficulties the families with special needs children come across. The paper argues that the main problems are not of daily life, but of social nature - the majority of the society are not ready to accept such people as equals. Sharon Draper’s novel can be considered as an appeal to "healthy" society to change its attitude to disabled people and to understand that their "deviation" shouldn’t be perceived as inferiority.
