THE FUNCTIONAL ROLE OF TRAVESTY MOTIVE IN M. YU. LERMONTOV’S POEM "ISMAIL-BEY"

Abstract. Within the framework of gender researches the author examines the functional role of travesty motive in M. Yu. Lermontov’s lyro-epical poem "Ismail-Bey". Considering historical and cultural context of the poem written in the period of the Caucasian war of the XIX century it would be reasonable to suppose that the image of "a mountain girl" disguised in man’s military uniform is folkloric idealization of a woman-warrior, a woman-fellow-fighter defending the independence of her Motherland. For the purpose of comparison the paper provides post-modernistic ironic interpretation of a travesty image in the novel by the modern authoress D. Damian.
