Abstract. The article identifies idio-ethnic and universal features of functional and cognitive potential of the abstract nouns "жизнь" and "life" in the evaluative aspect. The author examines the problems of human’s interpretative activity in which the meanings and functions of linguistic expressions develop. Special attention is paid to the evaluative aspect of functional and cognitive potential of the abstract nouns "жизнь" and "life" . The paper discovers its idio-ethnic and universal features, identifies cognitive and linguistic mechanisms to form evaluative meanings.
