Abstract. Basing on the pragmatic analysis of the dramatic texts written by E. Braginsky and E. Ryazanov, the author concludes that the humorous effect facilitates the refusal to cooperate with an interlocutor, which may be due to the emotional-volitional (psychological) state of the addresser, who apparently perceives the aspiration of the interlocutor to establish a phatic contact as undesirable in this situation, which does not correspond to his actual intentions. These statements, as the study shows, are characterized by a low degree of cooperativity.
