Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the poetics of the tragic in Yu. Safiullin’s play "Edigu". In the tragedy the problem of the characters’ confrontation with tragic circumstances in a desperate situation is fundamental. The task of the article is to analyze the interpretations of historical personalities of the Golden Horde in the Tatar playwrights’ creativity. Using the theory of the tragic, the author manages to reveal significant differences in highlighting the images of Edigu and Toktamysh in different authors’ works (N. Isanbet, Yu. Safiullin). Comparing dastan and tragedy, the author of the article also finds out that the artistic techniques of the reconstruction of the tragic confrontation influenced the plot variety of the plays.
