ON LINGUISTIC SIGNS, MEANINGS AND REPRESENTATIONS IN THE LIGHT OF BIOCOGNITIVE THEORY: FROM OBJECTIVE REALISM TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF BIOLOGY OF COGNITION

Druzhinin Andrei Sergeevich
MGIMO University

Abstract. The article discusses such notions crucial to every linguistic research as language, meaning, sign and representation in the light of biocognitive theory of human development. Proceeding from H. Maturana and F. Varela’s philosophy of cognition, language is defined as a phenomenon of human cognition, resulting from semiotic processes taking place in the human organism as a bio-socio-cultural being. Such processes are all about establishing causal connections (meaning), attributing symbolic value to them in the linguistic domain (creating signs) and actualisation of the respective knowledge (linguistic representation).
Key words and phrases: аутопоэзис, когниция, язык, языковое значение, языковой знак, ментальная репрезентация, языковая репрезентация, autopoiesis, cognition, language, language meaning, language sign, mental representation, linguistic representation
