"WORDS OF THE YEAR" AS LINGUOCULTURAL CONCEPTS

Abstract. The article is devoted to understanding the practice of choosing "Words of the year" in different linguistic cultures. The cross-cultural analysis of the semantic fields of "Words of the year" in synchronic and diachronic perspectives showed the greater political nature and extroversion of the Russian "Words of the year" in comparison with the English-language "Words of the year" (WOTY). Among the English-language WOTY a significant number of neologisms, including compound words formed by contamination, are revealed.
