Abstract. The article discusses typical peculiarities of the means to express phatic function, in particular, their functional-semantic value. The author examines the views of different linguists which are rather contradictory. Special attention is paid to the stereotype nature of a great number of phatic expressions. Provided analysis will be of interest for specialists in the sphere of text linguistics since it broadens the modern conceptions of phatic function markers. The author concludes that phatic expressions have a reduced semantic value because, losing their basic denotative meaning, they often become functional components.
