SEMANTICS AND SYMBOLISM OF THE NUMERICAL HIEROGLYPH "FOUR" IN THE CHINESE LANGUAGE (IN THE COMPARATIVE ASPECT WITH THE RUSSIAN LEXEME "FOUR")

Abstract. The article investigates the semantics of the Chinese hieroglyph expressing the meaning of the number four by the material of the ancient Chinese classics. The choice of the topic is due to the fact that the problem of numbers secondary meanings seems insufficiently studied. The paper considers in detail the semantics of the numeric hieroglyph "four", the intersection or the partial match of its semantic volume with the Russian lexeme "four". The author studies the special tetraphobia of number 4 caused by homonymy of the hieroglyph "four" and the hieroglyph ? "death'" in Chinese. The approach to the consideration of a numeric hieroglyph "four" in the Chinese language and the lexeme with the meaning "four" enables to present comprehensively the peculiarities of the reality perception associated with number four in the Chinese and the Russian language worldviews.
