Abstract. The article is devoted to the proper names in the language of the Italian political press. The author sets the goal to reveal their characteristic peculiarities, which may be found in the texts of newspaper articles. The paper reveals that many parties and political institutes have abbreviations or nominations, metonymically formed from their toponyms; proper names may have metonymic nominations according to party symbolism. The author examines expressiveness, peculiar to proper names in political press: politicians’ nicknames originated in the spoken language find their manifestation in the language of press. As examples the author uses extracts from contemporary Italian press.
