ON BASIC CHARACTERISTIC OF ENGLISH DETERMINATIVES

Abstract. The article considers the issue of a basic property of determinatives. Traditionally, such property is definiteness / indefiniteness. The peculiarities of functioning of some determinatives in real conditions (including by corpus data) make us reconsider this thesis and state their neutrality in relation to definiteness / indefiniteness. Deixis is assumed as a basic characteristic, peculiar to all determinatives constantly and reflecting their essence as operators of communicative situation.
