Abstract. The article traces the principal directions of the evolution of the poetic thinking of the peoples of Dagestan. The authors examine the problem of the genesis of denotative ideas by means of the Dagestan poetry of the second half of the XIX century. The research has shown that exactly in this period narrow-oriented and unambiguous semes were eliminated from literary circulation by poets, rationally-conceptual poetic denotations were enriched with sensory and emotional content, and the structures that had come from popular folklore - with associative fields and underwent secondary acculturation.
