THE ARTICLE PROBLEM IN THE GERMAN LANGUAGE IN THE ASPECT OF THE CATEGORY OF CERTAINTY/UNCERTAINTY (BY THE MATERIAL OF THE MODERN GERMAN PRINTED MEDIA)

Abstract. The article investigates the German article, its types and nuances within the functional-semantic category of certainty/uncertainty by the material of the modern German printed media. The choice of the appropriate article is in many ways conditioned by the contextual and situational provisions and by the author’s intention. The paper aims to prove the purposefulness of journalist’s choice of the definite/indefinite article. The fact of addresser’s illocutionary intention to represent a subject (person) as a familiar or unfamiliar is a crucial one.
