Abstract. The article considers a thanatological discourse of an epitaph text as a semiotic system. It seems important for the study of the significance of a grave inscription and has a direct connection with the nation’s culture. Thanatological information helps understand the depth of emotional experiences of a text sender in his/her attitude to the subject of death. Thanatological elements appear as signs, possessing semantic, syntactic and pragmatic aspects.
