THE TOPIC OF RACE RELATIONS AND ITS ARTISTIC SOLUTION IN BRET HARTE’S SHORT STORY "WAN LEE, THE PAGAN"

Abstract. In the article the topical problem of interracial and inter-ethnic relations by the material of the short story by the American writer Bret Harte "Wan Lee, the Pagan" is revealed. The history of its anti-racist views is outlined. The authors analyze the genre specificity of the short story, the peculiarities of combination of romanticism and realism, and such artistic means of creation of heroes as humor, irony, techniques of contrast, paradox and artistic detail.
