Abstract. The article is devoted to the theory of sign, in particular, such aspects as the complexity of the interpretation of the term "sign", perception as an attempt of interpretation, the reasons of semiosis, as well as the problem of the interpretation of sign formations at different levels. The aim of the paper is to compare approaches to the concept of sign and the interpretation of sign as a dual phenomenon in terms of attitude to the objects of reality. The conclusion is made that the sign plan of expression and the plan of its content are not always identical. Signs are abstracted from the real objects of reality and at the same time inextricably linked to them, and in this way the "duality" of the sign manifested both at the level of expression and at the level of content is expressed
