Abstract. The article examines precedent toponyms which are interpreted as the widely known onyms used in the text not so much to designate the specific object (country, city, urban objects, etc.) but as a cultural sign, symbol of the certain historical events, destinies, etc. The author argues for the thesis that toponyms can metonymically designate the certain events, people, epochs, time periods, etc. and in this case the precedentness comes out as a result of metonymical transfer which allows postulating the metonymical nature of precedentness.
