ON THE ISSUE OF THE ROLE OF COGNITIVE METAPHOR IN THE SPANISH POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Abstract. The article discusses the role of cognitive metaphor in the Spanish political discourse by the example of the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s speech at the UN General Assembly. Metaphor, being one of the most salient means of secondary nomination, in political communication also performs the function of influence. A speaker, using cognitive metaphors relating to the conceptual spheres "family", "artefacts", "myth", creates an alternative picture of the reality in order to influence an addressee’s cognitive sphere most effectively, get a response from him or her and persuade an addressee to act in accordance with the offered plan.
