Abstract. In the article the author analyzes the originality of the use in the poems by M. Atabaev of the Kumyk customs and folklore associated with the wedding, song-dance "syuydyum-tayak" head-dress, kunachestvo (fraternization) et al., and their new ideological and artistic interpretation. The peculiarity of this interpretation is a shift from the "mechanical" use of folk themes and texts in his poetic works to the "translation" of their meaning to the modern sounding with the simultaneous condemnation of the obsolete adats of the antiquity.
