FROM THE HISTORY OF FUNCTIONING AND STUDY OF THE OLD CHINESE DICTIONARY "SHIMING" ("EXPLANATION OF NAMES")

Abstract. The article for the first time in the domestic sinology covers the history of the most important monument of the early Chinese lexicography - dictionary of the beginning of the III century A.D. "Shiming" ("Explanation of Names"). The researcher touches on the problem of "Shiming" dating and authorship, analyzes reception history of the dictionary in the different epochs, examines the basic stages of its studying in the Chinese linguistics and Western sinology. For the last two decades Chinese linguistics accumulated considerable amount of factual material which allows arguing for the necessity to reconsider the views on the dictionary’s corpus and to reinterpret its scientific value.
