Abstract. The article examines the literary Universe of Nikolay Zabolotsky. The authors study poetic searches by Zabolotsky in the context of the literary practice of modernism and, primarily, symbolism. In particular, one of a few theoretical works of the poet "On the Essence of Symbolism", and also works from the debut collection of Zabolotsky "Columns" are analyzed. In spite of differences in opinions on many issues, it should be recognized that the symbolic heritage was a necessary fundament for all creative work of the poet.
