MARMELADOV AS A MICROCOSM: THE FALL, APOCALYPSE AND FOLK CHRISTIANITY

Abstract. The article examines Marmeladov’s monologue on Last Judgement, traces the structural parallels and ideological differences between this fragment and folkloric spiritual poetry. For the first time the author analyzes the etymology of the surname "Marmeladov" ("honeyed apple") which indicates his "universal humanity": Marmeladov is similar to Adam who escaped from heaven on his own will. So, Marmeladov becomes a microcosm personifying all the mankind from the beginning till the end of the age, and Raskolnikov’s attitude towards Marmeladov and his family embodies Raskolnikov’s relations with the humanity.
