Abstract. The article examines some aspects of the way of life of the English high society in the XIX century, described in the novel by O. Wilde "The Picture of Dorian Gray", which are in contradiction with the accepted ideas about the moral values of the Victorian era. In this connection the comparison of features, associated with the Victorian moral and relationships and principles of the novel characters, is examined. The paper substantiates the statement that hypocrisy of the English high society, depicted in the novel, served as one of the reasons of the criticism of this work.
