"ALMOST HEAVEN" BY L. THOMAS AS AN ARCHITECTURAL BIOGRAPHY: THE PROBLEM OF THE GENRE

Abstract. The article is devoted to the book by the modern English writer Leslie John Thomas "Almost Heaven". The main purpose of study is to identify the genre specificity of the text, balancing between artistic and documentary narrative by placing it into the context of spatial transformations of architectural image in the literature of the XX century. In this autobiographical, historical, culturological, character-descriptive and at the same time ironic work the writer tells the story of Salisbury Cathedral and its surroundings, resorting to the ambiguous genre generalization - "artistic architectural biography". Reference to the canon determined by the "artistic biography" (P. Ackroyd, etc.), stipulates the artistic style of presentation, the subjective interpretation of the facts, as well as quite strict factuality of the material, that is modeled per sample of the story about a historical figure (building).
