PARADIGMATIC NATURE OF WATER OBJECT AND RAVINE AND GULLY NAMES (BY THE MATERIAL OF THE UPPER AND MIDDLE DON BASIN)

Abstract. The article examines the problems of applying water object names to ravines and gullies at the Upper and Middle Don Basin. The paper aims to discover the paradigmatic nature of the mentioned toponyms. The author concludes that in the region under study two variants are possible: the full identity of negative landform oronyms with the original hydronyms and the transformation of the derivative. In the scientific literature the similarity of water object and ravine and gully names was already mentioned but the article for the first time analyzes the interrelation of these geographical names by the example of regional toponymy.
