Abstract. The authors in their study put forward several theses concerning the individual specificity of plot formation in the works of S. Dovlatov. Firstly, they propose the idea that the transfer of the observation point is one of the most common narrative methods in the writer’s prose. Secondly, they offer their own understanding of the functions of secondary "walk-through" characters in Dovlatov’s texts: the representation of each of them determines the future state of the author’s narrative "I" and at the same time realizes the phenomenon of "cognitive transfer", formed by perceived addressing to the potential plotlines of these episodic heroes. Thirdly, the images that exist in Dovlatov’s single narrative space have sufficiently autonomous and closed chronotopes, and it determines the high degree of writer’s freedom in forming the worldview and evaluative status of his characters, including the image of the author himself.
