Abstract. The article studies the question of Kazan criticism reception of the relations between people and intellectuals at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries in the works by A. P. Chekhov, in particular, considers the types of folk teachers in the writer’s prose, the reality depicted in the story "The Peasants", the perception of life in the story "The Neighbours", and the type of a main character in the play "The Seagull". This material allows revealing the specificity of the social and political attitudes of provincial critics and the features of Kazan literary criticism.
