Abstract. The article identifies the certain shortcomings when teaching English vocabulary to students. The author focuses on the basic trends in language teaching methodology, psychophysiological peculiarities of foreign vocabulary adoption, proposes the technologies for educational process optimization where the emphasis is on voluntary and conscious element aimed to raise the level of foreign language competence.
