Abstract. The article examines the artistic role of language variability in the British and American literature. The author analyzes the use of dialect in the works by realist writers Ch. Dickens, M. Twain, J. London and in the modern work by S. Fry. According to the author, language variability plays an important role when portraying the hero, differentiating personages; it can serve to emphasize the literary conflict.
