Abstract. The article considers the influence of contextual factors in the realization of the derived - precedential - meaning of modal verbs of the German language. New grammatical meanings acquired by modal verbs appeared in the process of grammaticalization, which is conditioned by different types of contexts. The conceptual basis of secondary grammatical meaning is a grammatical precedent in the form of a prototype - primary grammatical meaning. Reconsideration of primary grammatical meanings in derived ones in various contexts leads to occurrence of modal verbs polysemy.
