Abstract. The article reveals the convergent and divergent tendencies of the evolution of the image of Tristan as one of the principal characters of the European literature by the material of works "Tristan and Isolde" by Gottfried von Strassburg and "Tristan" by Thomas Mann. To the convergent tendencies one can attribute: the criticism of marriages of convenience, contraposition of the main character to public morals and the presence of a fragile woman. The divergent tendencies are the intensifying ostracism of the main figure, the refinement of the social image of Tristan and various outcomes of women’s heroines.
