Abstract. The phenomenon of dying state plays one of the key roles in the artistic world of V. Nabokov. His research helps to specify the ontological, epistemological and axiological ideas of the writer. The moment of being on the threshold of mortality, according to V. Nabokov, is the point of extreme existential tension when the abysses both in the literal and figurative senses are open for a person. It is the hour of summing up and beginning of retribution for the earthly life.
