Abstract. The article examines the problem of interrelation of a woman and society within the framework of gender approach. In this connection a special attention should be given to the novel by J. Austen "Northanger Abbey" which indicates the potential changes in the world outlook of men and women of that time on gender issue. The authors justify the statement that the characters of the novel, being restricted by patriarchal conventions, nevertheless lay the foundation of the further feministic standards.
