Abstract. The article examines one of the names of a natural phenomenon - rain - in the Tatar language. The paper analyzes the perception of an image of rain which is represented in the numerous names to indicate the kinds of rain in the Tatar literary language and its dialects. The author identifies specific lexical units typical only for the Tatar language, such as "л?йс?н я?гыр", describes people's customs, proverbs and signs associated with rain. The paper reveals the role of rain in the Tatar linguistic consciousness.
