Abstract. The article considers the correlation between the theory of intertextuality and the idea of symbol as the conventional sign, possessing relative semantics. The author shows that the symbol is a semiotic unit, representing the intertextual interaction in the broader sense, scheduled in the works by Yu Kristeva and R. Barthes, and the study of the contexts using symbols in the works, cycles, art directions makes it possible to formalize its description.
