Abstract. The article examines the issue of the Italian period of the life of N. V. Gogol. In this connection the author substantiates the statement that Italy became a new incentive not only for the rethinking of the writer’s life, his world-view and world outlook (including religious one), but also for the appearance of a special mission of Gogol transforming the western renaissance idea of harmonious person in his creative work.
