THE SEMANTIC PECULIARITIES OF THE VOCABULARY GROUP " PROFESSION OF INTELLECTUAL ACTIVITY AND ARTS" IN THE OLD ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Abstract. The article examines the semantic peculiarities of the vocabulary group "PROFESSION OF INTELLECTUAL ACTIVITY AND ARTS", forming part of the lexical-semantic field "naming types of activities" in the Old English period. The sample of lexical units and the analysis of word meanings, connected with intellectual labour, are conducted by the author. On the basis of this research the author offers to single out the following fields: teaching, quackery, art, literature, rhetoric, science and law. The article makes it possible to get a systematic idea on art representatives and other mental activity in the Old English period. The findings may serve as an additional source of information on the period of V-XI centuries’ England.
