Abstract. The article touches on the literary dispute of the politician V. I. Lenin and poet-symbolist V. Bryusov on the "freedom of speech" and "freedom of voice". The paper aims to emphasize the importance of culture of speech of the students of a sporting higher school. The originality of the research consists in the fact that comparing different viewpoints the authors address the problem of linguistic situation in the modern Russia, examine the reasons for cardinal changes in the language, mention the social factors, decline of the culture of speech and culture of communication. The paper pays special attention to the liberalization of the conception of a language norm, expansion of the sphere of deviations from the language norms, loosening of the system of thematic taboos which existed in the Russian communicative behaviour.
