Abstract. V. Nabokov wrote the lectures on the novel by Cervantes "Don Quixote" simultaneously with the novel "Lolita". He identified in the novel by Cervantes several levels of fictional reality which can also be discovered in "Lolita". Reality of fabulous illusions by which Don Quixote and the personages of "Lolita" are possessed is marked by the mixture of paradisiacal and demonic elements. From the reality of a fairy tale the personages pass to the next level of fiction where they discover in themselves a potential for humanism.
