Abstract. The article reveals the specificity of using the method of dream as the exponent of the nature and features of reality in the texts by N. V. Gogol and M. A. Bulgakov. The signs-symbols, representing the modern reality for authors, are revealed and analyzed. Special attention is paid to the consideration of the symbolism of darkness, associated with mental darkness, and to the symbolism of deception, associated with human relationships, pretense, and sham happiness.
