Abstract. The article deals with the nature and functioning of the creative principles of autobiographism used by A. I. Herzen in "My Past and Thoughts" and by L. N. Tolstoy in his trilogy. The use of huge empirical material as well as historical and publicistic digressions does not devalue the genre essence of "My Past and Thoughts". As a result of the comparative analysis of two biographies the author concludes that L. N. Tolstoy develops the forms of literary autobiographism. A. I. Herzen, without exceeding the limits of the genre of literary autobiography modifies significantly the structure of personal auto-narration, creating a kind of two-pronged form which can be called as a "historical autobiographism". Thanks to this innovation the author of "My Past and Thoughts" finds the opportunity to implement a "story about himself" in the field of artistic narration and in the sphere of publicistic (ideological) self-expression at the same time.
