Abstract. The article analyzes functioning of antonyms in the Kumyk folk tales. The author concludes that in the language of tales antonyms form the most significant lexical group which is conditioned by genre features. In the Kumyk tales there are non-cognate and cognate linguistic antonyms which are formed by the addition of an affix -ма. The language of tales is characterized by frequent use of compound antonyms which are hyphenated.
