Abstract. The article analyzes the essay of the American writer John Updike on the formation of American painting. The author investigates the specifics of the conducted by Updike analysis of visual material - pictorial portraits created by the painters of the XVIII century John Copley and Gilbert Stuart. The researcher concludes that in the formation of American art the leading role belongs to the painters who transformed a genre of a portrait into a mechanism for mythologization and cultivation of national identity.
